Malik's history is a long and winding road of pain. First, the Ishtahl family found Rishid (Odeon in the English version) in a well and raised him as their own. Isis (Ishizu) was the only child family member of the Ishtars thus far. Unless a child would be born, the clan that protected the Sennen Items would be in the hands of Rishid. But just a few months later, Mrs. Ishtar gave birth to a white haired baby boy. This was Malik. Growing up, Rishid slowly swore his alliance to Malik and the family clan. Because Malik was born, at the age of 10 he had to partake in a ritual that he feared. This ritual required that you have the Pharaoh�s Memory carved onto your back. Not ready for the pain and suffering, Malik asked Rishid to go
through
it for him, tears in his eyes. Rishid
happily accepted to swear his alliance. But
Mr. Ishtar would not allow it, and threatened to kill Rishid if he persisted.
Later, cries rang out from a room as a screaming Malik, blood streaking down
his neck, was tortured and burned with a hot knife, having the ritual carved on
his back. Limping in pain, he
entered his room.
"Ri--shid...who...should I hate?!"
But Malik never expected what followed
"Rishid?!"
Blood was streaked down Rishid's own face, tattooed permanently on the left side of his face.
"I can not take away your pain. But
with this wound, at least I can swear my allegiance to the clan."
A bitter hatred started to rise in Malik.
He saw his people slowly suffer from their work for the Pharaoh.
This created an alternate persona for Malik, a dark side or a
"Yami" side. Unlike the
Sennen Ring or Puzzle, this dark side came from Malik's soul, and not an object.
Not controlling his own mind, Dark Malik murdered Mr. Ishtar, and the
normal Malik didn't even know.
But soon Malik started to rise, even without his alternate personality.
Using the mind control powers of his Sennen Rod, he controlled Bandit
Keith Howard to fight the reincarnation of the Pharaoh, Yuugi.
Trying to force Dark Yuugi out, Malik did everything he could, but all
failed, and he decided to shatter the puzzle so that the Pharaoh�s bond with
Yuugi would be broken. (NOTE: MALIK DOES NOT WANT YUUGI'S PUZZLE.

Yuugi treaded more cautiously in the future.
Beating a Rare Hunter using a near-unbeatable deck, Malik then once again
spoke through him. Another dub
change was that Malik didn't reveal himself till the next duel happened.
Luring Yuugi into a duel with his Black Magician Rare Hunter called Pandora
(Arkana), Malik tried to kill Yuugi
with saw blades on the edge of the arenas.
(They were not Dark Energy Blades. They
were real blades that would slice their legs off.
Another dub cover-up) After
Yuugi won and saved Pandora from his fate, Malik revealed his motives and his
name to him: he wants to kill the
pharaoh for the suffering of his people. Also,
he believes the Pharaohs killed his father.
Controlling a mime, he dueled Yuugi using the god card Osiris.
The crafty Yuugi figured out an infinite loop in Malik's god combo and
won Osiris, helping him later on in Battle City many times.
Malik had to think of more ways to lure the Pharaoh to his death...
He teamed with Bakura. Bakura
would grab the Sennen Items, while Malik would get a clear shot at the Pharaoh.
With two people gunning for Dark Yuugi, how would he survive?
Under the persona of Namu, Malik slowly started appearing in front of Yuugi
and company's very eyes. Trusting
Malik, his goal came closer and closer...
Then the finals arrived. This
was where everything changed. Malik
used his Sennen Rod to control Jounouchi (Joey) and dueled Yuugi.
Both were tied to anchors, and had 30 minutes to complete the duel...
Yuugi sacrificed himself to let Jounouchi live with the final words
"Jounouchi...you are my most precious friend.
Jounouchi, I love you!" (Not like that you sick freak!)
Malik was furious that both ended up surviving (Shizuka, or Serenity in
the dub, dove into the ocean and got Jounouchi's key to free him).
Then finally, Battle Ship began. Malik's
journey was an easy one on Battle Ship.
